Crowns
& Bridges
A crown (commonly referred to as a cap) is a dental
restoration that completely covers a tooth and is permanently cemented
to it. A crown is used to restore a tooth that is badly broken or decayed
and needs to be rebuilt to its normal size and appearance to prevent its
loss. Crowns can also be used for cosmetic reasons when the original size,
color or shape of your teeth is not attractive and needs to be modified.
Dr. Vargas can fabricate beautiful crowns with the translucency and feel
of natural teeth.
For patients who are missing several teeth, he may recommend
a bridge. A bridge is a dental restoration that spans an area that has
missing teeth, replaces them and is permanently cemented to natural teeth
at each end.
Both crowns and bridges can now be fabricated completely
out of porcelain, without the need for supporting frames made out of metal.
Those all-ceramic restorations are as strong as the traditional metal-and–porcelain
ones and they have two very significant advantages:
- They do not have an unsightly metal collar showing
at the gum line, and
- The lack of a metal frame underneath allows the
light to pass through the teeth undisturbed, resulting in a very natural
bright colored restoration as opposed to a dull opaque one.
Ask Dr. Vargas about all-ceramic restorations during
your consultation.
